Better Angels Depolarizing Within Workshop Session 4-Chapel Hill, NC

This workshop consists of four one-hour sessions, January 15, 22, 29 and February 5, 6:30 - 7:30 PM. Attendance at all 4 sessions is very important*. Please register for all four sessions by clicking on "Select a Date" then clicking on a ticket for each of the 4 sessions, then clicking on "Register" (tip - uncheck the box requesting notifications from Eventbrite unless you like to get lots of email)

Much of today’s polarization is driven by how we talk with like-minded people about those on the other side. Too often, we stereotype, dismiss, or ridicule our fellow citizens who support the other political party, its leaders, and its policies. This free, four-week workshop helps participants become more aware of their own "inner polarizer." It teaches how to be critical without demonizing, dismissing, or stereotyping large swaths of the population. And it offers strategies for intervening constructively in social conversations with like-minded peers when these conversations veer into contempt and ridicule for people who hold other political views.

Who can come? Anyone interested in examining their own inner polarization.

Each session will be preceded by a meal at 5:45.pm provided by various volunteer organizations. Workshop participants are invited to jion us for this meal and make a donation to support the cause promoted by the organization providing the meal.

Questions? Contact Jack Denniston at jldenniston3@gmail.com

*If you cannot commit to attending all four sessions, it would be better to wait and plan to attend another Depolarizing Within Workshop in the future.

Ideas at Work: Repairing Our Social Fabric with John Wood Jr. and April Lawson of Better Angels

The Center for the Study of Liberty is delighted to bring you a LIVE online conversation with John Wood, Jr. and April Lawson of Better Angels. Better Angels is a national citizens' movement to reduce political polarization. By bringing "reds" and "blues" all across the country together in workshops, debates, and community alliances, they aim to teach practical skills and strategies for communicating across political differences. Yet their vision extends far beyond getting us all through the 2020 election. The leaders of this movement are asking questions like:

  • "Can we change the trajectory of our civic culture?"
  • "Can we repair our torn social fabric?"

John and April will share their insights about the "unmooring" that took place in 2016, the influence of college campuses on our national dialogue, the importance of rebuilding our "emotional economy," and much more.
