Not only to people care about the condition of non-humans in society, it has always been so. But those who see the responsibility of humans to care for our compatriots on earth are divided about who should care, how we show we care and whether humans are good or evil. The divide has created separate channels of information that are in conflict with one another. If you've seen one channel, you simply don't believe the other when it's presented as an argument by the "other side". Facts could help us see we are more agreed than not but human nature won't allow this to happen when strongly held beliefs about who we are or whether we are good people are at stake.
