Oxford Juneteenth is a community celebration established with a simple goal – to build bridges between neighborhoods in Oxford. The celebration was a started by families. Every family on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive donated $20 and a package of hot dogs to host a community event open to everyone. We recognized that by sharing food, breaking bread with our neighbors across Oxford increased our sense of community, understanding, and African American contributions to our sense of place.
Twelve years later 2,500 residents come together as a family. This year we invite you to be part of the family. Our committee is planning the largest celebration ever and we need your $20 and a package of hot dogs…. or a little more if your budget allows.
Our celebration will kick off on Friday, June 14th with a new, free community picnic Linen on the Lawn, at the Old Armory Pavilion with live music sponsored in part by the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council and Mississippi Presenters Network. Come early and set up a table or spread a blanket and bring your picnic basket. You can even reserve a table & chairs or buy a picnic package by City Grocery Catering by clicking here!
Then join your neighbors on Saturday for the Juneteenth celebration at the Oxford Intermediate School for the city’s best block party with entertainment, games, and fellowship!
